First people to reach the South Pole

Confirmed Daring journeys · Verified 2026-10-30 · WWV-PE-008

A Norwegian party of five led by Roald Amundsen reached the South Pole on 14 December 1911, travelling with sled dogs. British explorer Robert Falcon Scott's team arrived on 17 January 1912 and found the Norwegian tent already there.

Scott's party died on the return march. The Pole sits on a moving ice sheet, so the exact spot reached in 1911 is only approximate.
